At 120 Thabo Mbeki Street in Mokopane, a new and deeply personal visitor experience is coming to life. The Beauty R Us Barbie Museum and Shop is more than a collection of dolls. It is a tribute to love, creativity, fashion and memory — created by Vernon in honour of his late life partner, Fhilip.
The museum officially opens on 5 June 2026, inviting visitors into a world filled with colour, nostalgia, beauty and imagination. With over 900 unique Barbie dolls and collectibles, the museum offers guests the opportunity to see pieces that are rarely found, carefully collected, and in many cases, not for sale. Each display tells part of a larger story: one of passion, dedication and a love for the beautiful details that make each doll special.
A Tribute to Fhilip
Fhilip was a passionate and hardworking fashion designer with a deep love for Barbie dolls, fashion and creative expression. Those who knew him remember him as hard working, passionate and dedicated — someone with a unique sense of style and a fabulous personality.
His connection to Barbie started long before the museum. In earlier years, Fhilip would take old Barbie dolls and restore them, giving them new hair, new dresses and a second life. These dolls were not simply kept for display; many were given freely to disadvantaged children. This act reflected one of the things that made Fhilip so special: he loved people, and he found joy in sharing beauty with others.
For Fhilip, Barbie represented more than a doll. Barbie was fashion, creativity, transformation and possibility. Each doll carried its own character, its own outfit, its own story and its own sense of glamour. He loved the excitement of new Barbie arrivals, the moment of unboxing, and the joy of seeing each piece added to the collection.
Vernon and Fhilip’s Shared Dream
Vernon and Fhilip met through Facebook, connected by mutual friends. What began as a connection grew into a life partnership filled with love, business, travel and shared creativity. Together, they built a relationship that was both personal and practical — a strong partnership in life and work.
Fhilip inspired Vernon’s own interest in fashion and Barbie collecting. Through Fhilip, Vernon became more involved in dazzling dresses, creative displays and the beauty of collectible dolls. Their shared passion eventually led to the idea of creating something special around Barbie and fashion.
Although the idea of a museum had been spoken about, Vernon and Fhilip never had the chance to complete that dream together. After Fhilip passed away, Vernon decided to bring the vision to life in his memory. The museum began taking shape in November 2025, becoming a place where Fhilip’s passion could continue to shine.
For Vernon, the museum is not only a business or attraction. It is personal. It is a way to preserve the beauty Fhilip collected, the creativity he inspired, and the love they shared.
A Collection of Over 900 Unique Barbie Dolls
Today, the Beauty R Us Barbie Museum is home to over 900 Barbie dolls and collectibles. Visitors can expect to see a wide range of dolls, from fashion-focused pieces to rare collector’s items, boxed displays and special editions.
Some pieces are deeply meaningful because of their history, while others stand out because of their rarity, styling or exceptional quality. One of the most treasured dolls in the collection is Pink Splendour Barbie, a favourite of Fhilip’s. Vernon remembers how much Fhilip wanted this doll and how much he admired its beauty and craftsmanship.
The museum allows visitors to see Barbie dolls that they may never come across again. Many of the items are collector’s pieces and are not available for sale. This makes the museum experience unique: it is a place to admire, remember and appreciate the artistry and nostalgia behind Barbie collecting.
More Than a Museum
Beauty R Us is also home to a shop and boutique perfumery, adding another layer to the visitor experience. The perfumery celebrates individuality, with each fragrance inspired by the scents people love most. With over 20 perfumes available, customers can choose from a wide variety of fragrances designed to suit different personalities, moods and styles.
The perfumes are part of the Beauty R Us story and are now presented with the wording “Inspired by Fhilip”, honouring the person whose creativity and passion helped shape the heart of the brand.
In addition to perfumes, the shop offers Barbie-related products and merchandise, allowing visitors to take home a piece of the experience. The shop focuses on original Barbie products and related items, while the museum itself remains a showcase of collector’s pieces and treasured displays.
A New Tourism Experience for Mokopane
The Beauty R Us Barbie Museum and Shop is proudly located in Mokopane, South Africa, and aims to become a memorable tourism attraction for the town and surrounding region. With its unique theme, glamorous displays and emotional story, the museum has the potential to attract families, collectors, fashion lovers, tourists and anyone who appreciates nostalgia and creativity.
The museum also hopes to work closely with tour operators, local businesses and the Mokopane community to promote tourism in the area. By creating a distinctive visitor destination, Beauty R Us can contribute to local tourism, encourage foot traffic and help showcase Mokopane as a town with special and unexpected experiences.
The visit from the Kwêla team to capture video footage marked an exciting moment for the museum and helped highlight the growing interest around this unique local attraction.
The Meaning Behind Beauty R Us
At its heart, Beauty R Us is about beauty in many forms — beauty in fashion, beauty in memory, beauty in collecting and beauty in giving something meaningful to others.
The museum keeps Fhilip’s memory alive by sharing what he loved with the public. Visitors are invited to walk through the displays and see what Fhilip saw: glamour, detail, imagination and joy. Each doll represents part of a story, and together the collection becomes a tribute to a life lived with passion.
Fhilip’s lesson to Vernon was simple and powerful: live every day to the fullest, as if it is your last. That message is reflected in the museum itself. It is a reminder to celebrate what we love, to create boldly, and to leave behind something meaningful.
Looking Ahead
Vernon’s dream for the Beauty R Us Barbie Museum is for it to grow and continue becoming something special. In time, he hopes the museum will become a lasting legacy, eventually to be passed on to his family.
The museum is still growing, and its future may include more displays, new experiences, events, tours and further collaborations with the local tourism industry. As the collection continues to develop, Beauty R Us aims to offer visitors more than a once-off visit — it hopes to become a place people return to, talk about and remember.
When asked what Fhilip would think of the museum today, Vernon believes he would be blown away.
And if Fhilip could walk through the museum with him now, Vernon would say:
“We made it, my love. Something special.”
